This work was inspired by a quiet, meaningful moment—watching my boys walk down to the surf during a family holiday in Byron Bay. After browsing through photos from that trip, I was drawn to this particular image and felt compelled to explore it through a hand-torn paper collage, using a limited palette. I was captivated by the expressive quality of the torn edges and how the gaps between the pieces added depth and emotion to the scene. This effect resonated with me so strongly that I took it further, translating the collage into an acrylic painting while maintaining the same distinct shapes. The irregular spaces from the original collage became an integral part of the final work, enriching its narrative and evoking the ephemeral, layered nature of memory.
